The Two Types of Quit Smoking Drugs that May Change Your Life.
Bupropion and Varenicline: The Quit Smoking Drugs. There are now two drugs on the market which are considered to be quit smoking drugs. The first drug to hit the market as an aid to stop smoking was bupropion. This drug is an anti-depressant and was sold by the brand name of Wellbutrin. When it was found that it could be used as a drug to quit smoking the same drug was remarketed as an aid to help people to quit smoking and goes by the brand name of Zyban. It is still sold as Wellbutrin as an anti-depressant.
There is now a newer drug called varenicline which has been approved by the FDA to be sold as a drug to stop smoking. It is sold by Pfizer and goes by the brand name Chantix. Both of these quit smoking drugs work by suppressing the craving for nicotine. They also alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Chantix is sold in a tablet form which must be taken twice daily in a course of 12 weeks. Zyban is also sold in a pill form. Zyban was the first stop smoking prescriptions prescribed specifically to help people quit smoking. It became a quit smoking drug when patients who were on it for depression found that they had less of an urge to smoke. It was then tested for this and found to be effective as a quit smoking drug. Patients were told to continue smoking as they took it and when they reached the stop smoking date that they picked the dose was then increased. It is believed that Chantix might work for people who have not succeeded by using Zyban.
These drugs used to help you stop smoking can not be bought over the counter, this is because they are considered prescription quit smoking drugs which any doctor can prescribe. Some health insurance companies will even pay for them, because in the long run they make more money if less of their clients get sick. It’s believed that every day spent not smoking will decrease the chances of getting smoking related illnesses such as lung cancer and heart disease.
