Numerous Reasons to Stop Smoking - Your Health is Number One!

There are so many reasons to stop smoking today and most of them are health related.  The main reason to stop smoking that comes to most of us first is the simple fact that cigarette smoke is harmful to one’s health. It can cause lung cancer and heart disease but it also causes skin and mouth cancer, throat cancer, emphysema and other lung related ailments. Then there are the reasons to stop smoking that have to do with the health of those around you and with considering other people and caring for others. Many people become more in touch with this reason to stop smoking when they have children.  They do not want the air that their child will breathe to be poisoned. Once this becomes important at the conscious level, they may start showing concern for other people’s health also and they may start to only smoke outdoors.

Another reason to stop smoking and this is becoming more important all the time, is that people who smoke are feeling more ostracized all the time. When some people quit they will say things like, “I was tired of being made to feel like I was a leper.”  Peer pressure is a common reason to stop smoking because we are social animals.  Humans do not like feeling ostracized. There are less and less public places where people can smoke. This reason to stop smoking must have come into play for many social people.  Excusing yourself to go outside and smoke is not at all the same as enjoying a cigarette with friends at a table after a meal.

There was a time when people would just blow the smoke in each other’s faces and not even think about the one or two people at the table who didn’t smoke.  Then the numbers became even in terms of non-smokers to smokers and now the ratio is tipped in the other direction where there might be one or two people who do smoke.  These are the people who now excuse themselves to go outside.

Reasons to Stop Smoking Continue to Grow:
At one time there weren’t many reasons to quit smoking because many people did not know of the harm caused by smoke and second hand smoke.  Proof of this is that in the seventies it was not uncommon to see an ashtray in a gynecologist/obstetrician waiting room.  Pregnant women puffed away, as did doctors in front of their patients.  It is now a different world in terms of how much is known about smoking. The ashtrays in the clinic waiting rooms have been replaced by “How to quit smoking” pamphlets and pamphlets on the dangers that smoking has on an unborn child if the mother smokes.

People can no longer be ignorant to the harsh facts about smoking with all the information that is on cigarette packages today. The greatest reason to quit smoking of all, personal health, stares smokers in the face every time they reach for a cigarette.

Apart from the serious health consequences, esthetically, it is now common knowledge that smoking may cause impotence and premature wrinkling of the skin. Sometimes a reason to quit smoking that has to do with vanity works best of all.
