Smoking History and Where Stop Smoking Prescriptions Came in:

Since the new millennium a serious war has been waged against tobacco. In earlier times people puffed away without a care in the world. Smoking was picked up by many, eager to look as cool as the Marlboro Man or the classic actresses with their long cigarettes and painted nails. Smoking was mainly associated with a nice after dinner cigarette, a social activity, or just a way to unwind and relax. As we know now, nicotine actually helps the brain release “happy hormones” which contribute to the relaxing effect smoking has on a person. Dopamine, an endorphin released by the brain when smoking is known to make people feel good, calm and relaxed.  This feeling becomes associated with smoking which then causes it to become habit forming, in addition the fact that nicotine is extremely physically addictive.

Then, in the seventies and eighties, scientific information began exposing smoking and its harmful characteristics. It also exposed the severe hazards that smoking posed against unborn children of smoking mothers. It seems that the world has finally got it and is without excuse or ignorance. Anti-smoking campaigners have succeeded at revealing to the general population the harm is being done every time a cigarette is lit. It can be hard to find a public place now where people are allowed to engage in that once cool, relaxing activity.

There are many reasons each smoker has for wanting to quit and there are equally as many methods to accomplish it. However, stop smoking prescription pills may very well be the easiest and safest way to quit and to avoid the pain of quitting cold turkey.

Stop Smoking Prescriptions:
The pharmaceutical companies wasted no time in trying to produce a magic stop smoking prescription pill that could help people achieve their goal. The first stop smoking prescription drug was actually prescribed for depression. It is called bupropion and is manufactured as Wellbutrin as an anti-depressant. The doctors prescribing this medication found out that their patients claimed to not feel like smoking when they were on it.  This information made its way back to the pharmaceutical company who now market it as a stop smoking prescription drug by the name of Zyban.  It continues to be sold under the name of Wellbutrin as an anti-depressant drug but the exact same medication is sold as a stop smoking prescription drug.  In 2006 Pfizer introduced a newer stop smoking pill called Chantix. This pill is actually varenicline.  Both of these stop smoking prescription drugs are showing great promise as fighters in the war against tobacco.

The Success of Stop Smoking Prescriptions:
Varenicline and bupropion remain the only two stop smoking prescriptions at this point in time.  Many people claim that they were able to stop smoking while taking one of these prescriptions. Many people claim that they could not have done it otherwise. Researchers are wanting to do more research in order to gain proof that it is the stop smoking prescription which has actually helped the person who has tried many times to successfully quit. There have been some short term studies which showed that there was no difference between the group who tried to quit cold turkey and the group who quit using stop smoking prescription medication.  But it’s hard to argue with success when someone has tried to quit cold turkey and has only succeeded once they tried one of these stop smoking prescription drugs.
